St. Ann's
Cares is a branch of the Social Justice Committee of St. Ann's Church.
It was founded in 1993 as part of the Americares Homefront Project, and
became its own entity in 2002. Its mission is simple: to provide a "safer,
warmer, drier" living environment for the less fortunate. Toward
that goal, St. Ann’s Cares has managed an army of volunteers for
a "day of caring" designed to build, upgrade, renovate, and
beautify housing for thousands of people over the years. Group homes,
shelters, and even private dwellings have benefited from the skills and
generosity of our parishioners.
This year's event is made up of two projects and will take place
on May 1, 2010.
One project involves exterior painting and window replacement
at the New Horizons Village assisted living complex in Unionville. New
Horizons is a 74-unit apartment complex which provides basic non-medical
support services to adults with physical disabilities. Tenants manage
their own lives in a supportive and fully accessible setting.
The other will consist of painting and miscellaneous upgrades
(including making some areas wheelchair-accessible) at Holy Family Retreat
House. Many of us are familiar with Holy Family from mens’ and
womens’ retreats, but it is open to all who seek to deepen their
relationship with God and one another; men, women, and youth come to
weekend, day and evening retreats, and programs where they can journey
with God in an atmosphere of respect and hospitality. Our project will
enable Holy Family to reach more people.
At the end of the day, the Marthas & Marys will provide
dinner to all volunteers in Fr. Bennett Hall.
